How can it be August? Sure, we have plenty of great weather left for sailing, boating, fishing, cruising and swimming. Saturday’s lady skipper race was well attended, thank you to Eric Matteson for asking me to race Sundance, it was so much fun. We had great wind for the race and beautiful weather.

The club looks great, thanks to all the work that has been completed on the workdays. There are always more projects that need to be completed, if you haven’t completed your workday, please reach out to Rear Commodore Ben Yager or Vice Commodore Emily Wilczewski or Earl Chapman Dredging Lead to see if you can help with any club projects, social events or dredging project needs.

August 7th is our First Friday bonfire, hopefully the weather will be perfect for it. August is a busy month of races for the club and other clubs, please see Fleet Captain Kevin’s schedule. I am working on firming up the Commodore’s Challenge date and boats for our race with PMI’s Commodore Pete Stubler. More information to follow.

Just got back from a few days in the 1000 Islands, we are so lucky to have such beauty so close to us. Went through Boldt Castle, they have done so much restoration since the last time I was there. Worth the trip if you haven’t been there in a while.

Three of our PYC members have donated their sailboats for Sunset Cruises to support the 5th Annual #Nash Golf Outing to benefit Golisano Children’s Hospital, Monday August 3, 2026.

August 22 is our Tacky Light Night!  What some consider “The Event” of the season! Decorate your boat in the most outrageous lights you have. All those battery powered flash lights you’ve been saving for a power outage, now’s the time to make sure they work! Hoarding fairy lights? Hoist them up the mast! 

Bonus points awarded to boats with a theme.

This is a family friendly event and we heartily encourage all ages to participate!

DOCKSIDE DISPATCHES from the Rear Commodore | BEN YAGER

Happy August PYC Crew!

Thank you to everyone who has already put in time this season — the two spring workdays, ongoing dock and grounds projects, and all the behind-the-scenes help have made a real difference. The club is in better shape because of your efforts.

We’re now heading into one of the most important projects of the year: dredging. It is scheduled to start Monday, August 3 at 8:00 AM and will continue through that week and into the following week as needed. Right now we are significantly short on labor. A small core group is carrying most of the load, and without more volunteers we will have to cancel days (especially in the second week).

Two ways you can help right away:

  1. Weed Pulling – We need a few members (especially those who still need to complete their workday) to clear weeds from the west end of both the north and south fairways. The dredge does not cut weeds, and they wrap around the dredge head and cause constant stoppages. This is a perfect independent workday task. Contact me and I’ll get you set up with the equipment and a quick orientation.

  3. Hours are 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM Monday–Wednesday and 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Thursday–Friday. You can recruit friends and work as a team if that works better for you.

If you have not yet fulfilled your workday obligation, this is an excellent opportunity. Weed pulling or a dredging shift will count toward your requirement. Just let me know and I’ll make sure you get credit.

They are currently relocating from Buffalo to Ontario, so they will be close to the Club and closer to family. With this beautiful height-of summer weather, I’m sure Haul/Launch is the last thing on your minds. Unfortunately time, tide, and Haul/Launch wait for no one. Haul/Launch invoices have been sent to every member with a boat in the harbor. Most of you were sent the invoice by email. There are two people who prefer USPS and those have been sent too. If you’ve been missed, please let me know.

The Haul/Launch Invoices were sent to everyone regardless of whether they’ve hauled/launched at PYC before or not, just in case things have changed since last year. Every year we send these to all members to offer this service. These invoices also contain sign-up for winter storage. If you don’t want to have your boat hauled/launched/stored at PYC, let me know.

For those that wish to use this service, your payment is due Aug 15, 2026.

We’re a week away from dredging startup.

Dredge got launched today, and “pre dredge” set of soundings taken.📏🌊

Right now, we’re a bit light for staffing several days.  Most days, during the daytime, could use another person or two. Mon/Tue/Wed evenings are pretty well set.

At this point, the 2nd week is likely going to have to get cancelled due to lack of labor, not lack of need. 

Based on our historical dredging rate and the amount of material we need to remove, we need 6-7 days of dredging to get where we want to.  I added a few extra days as a precaution against weather or other delays, so it would be good if we could at least get Mon/Tue fully staffed.

Pulling cables and pipes all day isn’t your idea of a good time? You’re in luck…there’s several other ways to help.

  • Saturday Aug 1, 11 AM we have a pipe launching party.  If we get 6 or so, we can do this in 60-90 min.  Let me know if you’ll be there so I can sleep better 😊.
  • Floating dock relocation….Boats should be off the floating dock fingers by the weekend.  Pulling the fingers off  the floating docks and moving them to the side (Boat Ramp?) saves the crew from stopping dredging to do it Monday.
    • I’m not scheduling a time for this. Just hoping that sometime after the boats are off the fingers, a couple of members who are at the club anyway will see it and move them.

If there’s someplace closer to where you’d be starting from, we can use them.  Not wedded to Tops, just the only place I know of.

Lunch Delivery – If we could get someone to pick up lunch and bring it to the club, it saves the crew having to send someone .  Fully reimbursed by the club (I will try to pre-pay if I can)

Anytime around lunchtime each day. 

We typically get subs, as timing is a bit fluid and we eat in shifts to keep the dredge moving.

Likely Tops on rte 104, as there’s not much open Mon/Tue closer.
